What is the balloon made of? Can I be allergic?

The balloon is made of silicone and it is very soft even when filled with saline. It is extremely unlikely that you can be allergic to it.

With the gastric balloon, expect a weight loss of 30% of excess weight on average. Some people lose more and some people lose less. Speak with Dr Kurian regarding what you can expect.

Financial Things

One of my New Year’s Intentions was to get my financial life in order, so I thought a good way to keep track of that would be to do a regular Financial Things post, both to remind myself that I am making progress and also to have something to post (I tend to tell myself that I have nothing to write about, but then I’ll read someone else’s post and ideas explode in my head). So without further ado, here are my latest financial things:

I reconnected with an old budgeting system I used to use. All of last year I used YNAB (You Need A Budget) to track my expenses and plan my budget, and while I really love almost everything about it, it just doesn’t make sense to me to pay $84 a year for a budgeting system when I a) am trying to cut expenses and b) there are so many budgeting systems that cost way less or are free. In searching for an alternative to YNAB, I tried several different options – and was getting frustrated that I couldn’t… Read More

Weekly Weigh-in 3.2

Weight on July 15: 278.6
Today’s Weight: 282.6

4 pounds GAINED

I just spent the last 10 days in 4 different cities between work and vacation….Columbus-Indianapolis-Chicago-Minneapolis….whew

Yes I could have traveled and not gained 4 lbs. If I didn’t drink so much in Chicago, if I watched what I was eating and how much of it I was eating just a little closer, and I could have gotten out of bed and exercised while I was gone, but it happened and I’m still swinging around on these 5 lbs.

I leave for New Orleans on Friday to celebrate my cousin’s 30th birthday, so I don’t foresee it getting much better than this next week. I’m not going to torture myself, I’m just going to start back to my normal exercise routine and watch portions this week before I leave.

I’m in no place to make an empty promise that I won’t go overboard in NOLA. School starts when I get back and hopefully a normal work routine will … Read More

We Had it All: My Favorite Ragnar Moment

The best part of doing a Ragnar Relay Race is the incredible life-long connection to someone you can experience simply by sharing a van and a race with them.

From Fat to Finish Line Van 2 – We’re missing John on this for some reasonI’ve done three Ragnars and three times I’ve been blessed with walking away from the races feeling bonded for life to the people I shared a van with.

There’s just something about the cheering, supporting, running and the sleep deprivation that brings people closer together.
One of my very, very favorite memories ever was from Ragnar Miami – Key West FL. This was the Ragnar featured in the From Fat to Finish Line movie. Some of what didn’t make it to the movie was our middle of the night shenanigans. We were all a little slap happy as we made our way to the next major exchange – where I would get the baton from Rik (Van 1) to kick off our van’s legs. On the way to that exchange, we laughed, joked, hit up a Wendy’s for ket… Read More

Coming Up

Regurgitation and reflux explained, with solutions

“When I bend over lunch and stand back up… I’m done.”
Is this you? Regurgitation or reflux from your stomach back up into your swallowing to cold your esophagus is very common. Once in a while is normal but more than three times a week can indicate a problem. It’s not very fun to have it happen and there are also some damaging side effects of having acid come back up your esophagus over and over again. It can lead to chronic irritation, scarring that causes a narrowed area and difficulty swallowing or even some risk of esophageal cancer.

Avoiding aggravating factors is a place to start.

Losing some weight if you have too much, avoiding caffeine, chocolate, peppermint, citrus foods, spicy food, eating late at night, or eating a large meal then laying down or straining are all helpful to lessen the frequency of heartburn.
The next step is to try neutralizing the acid with calcium carbonate such as Tum’s…. Read More
